Fault Lines Crowdfunder

How is climate change affecting you? Or is it something in the distant future to worry about? We are making a new dance production, Fault Lines, in response to the climate emergency and how it affects us all. We need your support.

What we’re doing

We are fundraising for our new dance production Fault Lines. We are making this work in response to climate change – we don’t want to preach or judge – but we do believe this is important. We want to connect with people through creating a highly physical imaginative show that captures the state of our planet.

Key elements

·      Showcase dancers from diverse background

·      Seek thoughts and views from a wide spectrum of people across all sides

·      Gather advice and facts from the Green Party

·      Work with an award-winning writer and digital artist

Why we’re doing it

We are all aware the planet is in trouble; however, the urgency of the crisis threatens to exist as background noise, happening via our screens somewhere else, to someone else. Sometimes the overload of information is just too daunting to deal with!

Through this new production and the activities that surround it, we are committed to engaging people in thought-provoking experiences where balance is found between the highly volatile changes of our planet and the opportunity for hope, change and individual intervention.

“In-between meetings, I tend to spend a lot of time doing work on my computer to communicate issues. Viewing the work by Lîla Dance reminded me how important it is to connect with my feelings on the climate crisis, I’m truly grateful to have had such an experience”. - Laura Eccott, Chichester Arun Green Party Co-ordinator

Why we need your support

The pandemic hit us and many other arts organisations badly. We were resilient and worked online supporting our fellow performers and reaching audiences in the best way we could, by offering free online classes and sharing free film versions of our work. We know that we were incredibly lucky to survive as many arts organisation didn’t make it.

We survive on applying for project grant funding via the Arts Council but this is not guaranteed. It has become harder to get and doesn’t cover all the costs of us making work and running Lîla. We know that we are in a cost-of-living crisis and that times are tough for everyone.

We are asking you to help us with any donation you can – no matter how small. Every donation helps us to move forward and create new work, be able to employ dancers and other creatives and keep Lîla going.

Your money will cover:

·      rehearsal space costs

·      travel

·      costumes and accommodation

·      And importantly keeping freelance dancers and creatives in paid work

This production will also have a community cast who get to perform in the work alongside our professional dancers. Read how we make this happen on our website.

Being part of our community cast has had a huge impact on the people who have taken part:

‘Had such an amazing time, you are such fab people as well as dancers, thank you so much for an unforgettable experience!’

‘Thank you so much for an amazing opportunity to perform with you all! Absolutely loved it!’

We know from experience that the arts, and for us, dance, have the power to make a huge impact on people feeling connected to important issues. We know taking part in creative workshops, helping us create new work and seeing live shows can ignite people to feel empowered to improve their lives and the lives of others. What could be more important right now than the planet climate?

We are passionate about creating opportunities for people to connect with themes that are relevant to their lives. The climate emergency is relevant to everyone. We want to use our skills to create a project where people can think, feel, and be motivated to make positive change in their own lives without judgement or preaching. Although a serious topic, we’ll have fun getting to grips with it!

What we’re going to do

We will create a brand-new show with 6 dancers, working with environmental organisations and other brilliant creatives to challenge how we can all make a difference to the planet. Alongside the show we will be offering workshops and a chance to co-create the work with us.

It’s important to us that diverse points of view inform what we make and that we are making work that is relevant for the audiences we want to reach. We’ll be showcasing 6 dancers from around the world; a tour de force of physicality and a metaphor that we are in this mess together!

We’ll be inviting people from all walks of life to contribute their thoughts and experiences, and this will feed into what we make. We are talking with the Green Party and discovering positive changes they have installed in people’s lives through achievable, practical means.

We will be working with award-winning writer for BBC and Sky dramas Nick Walker to bring these ideas together in new writing that will challenge people's ideas and place personal experiences at the heart of the work.

Award-winning digital artist Zach Walker (MakeAmplify) will create augmented reality digital projections bringing to life our changing planet. Rewilding, rebuilding and renovation will interact with the cinematic moving bodies of our 6 dancers. Creating hope and an opportunity to turn things around.

We are currently self-funding research in the studio, and any donation big or small would be gratefully received in helping us reach the next stage of making the work in the Summer. We’ve got some lovely digital goodies to say thanks for your donations 😊
