<image:title>Blog - Sustainable touring - Artist’s notebook - These questions have underpinned everything that we have done in the making and touring of Fault Lines. The work itself, an embodiment of living in a hotter, less stable world, the process a mission to artistically find the language of this but also find greener methods of making and touring. In making the work we were determined to reduce waste and embrace reuse before recycle. All of the costumes for cast and community cast dancers are from charity shops or donations, and 90% of all tech and props are 2nd hand, loaned or donated. We use a low energy setting on our projectors, and use rechargeable batteries for in our torches.</image:title>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Sustainable touring - Artist’s notebook - We tend to make works with a set. We love working inside the on stage world that a set can create but it had been our experience that this was not particularly environmentally friendly because you needed to purchase lots of new material and then when touring travel it around. So rethink time! Our producer Lou had an idea to create the scenery through digital projection - this would reduce the carbon footprint (especially if we source the tech 2nd hand) and be much easier to pack down and travel - another win for our greener touring agenda! So digital projection became our new artistic venture! It was a challenge to understand the potential of this form having not explored it before, but working with digital artist Zach Walker from MakeAmplify enabled us to play, select, reject and finally refine the digital palette we wanted in the work. What was particularly interesting for us in the work, was the decision to embrace the artificial representation of nature and reject the potential for presenting ‘realistic images’. This opened up new narratives within the work around what happens when this is the only way we can connect wit nature? Weaving the digital, dance, sound and narrative together was an artistic challenge - there is a lot of layers to contend with but it was worth the risk for us to develop as artists and also find a more sustainable method for our working practices.</image:title>
<image:caption>Note to selves - Challenge - Change - Compromise = Risk - rethink - reevaluate = Braver approaches - bolder ideas - Bigger issues.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fault Lines @ Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024 - If you’ve been to Edinburgh during the festival you’ll know that flyering is a big thing - you will have so many shows thrust into your hands to draw you into the hundreds of shows running every day. For us we had to think about this carefully - we need to flyer but how to do this in a more sustainable way. So our mission was to engage people in conversation if they were interested offer them a flyer - no mass hand outs! This was challenging for us all but it was so lovely to actually hear about people’s passion for climate and for dance… our dancers and producer Lou, did a brilliant job on this! It’s quite a tough thing to do… lots of confidence needed and a lot of competition to catch people’s attention - we loved that one person just laid face-down on the floor, yelling up to people… certainly got people looking!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sarah Golding on auditioning for Lîla - In 2014 I attended an open audition for Lîla. I had only graduated a few months prior so I hadn’t yet mastered the art of "remember you are auditioning the company you are auditioning for too" and audition anxiety was very much a thing. As soon as we were introduced to the Lîla team the anxiety disappeared; it was clear that the intention of Abi and Carrie was to make us all feel 100% comfortable in the space. We did a short class and then learnt some super physical rep from ‘Tracker’; and although it was an open audition, they were able to easily create a personal and warm atmosphere.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sarah Golding on auditioning for Lîla - The last thing that was looked at during the audition day was our comfortability using vocal work. After doing the pre audition mandatory YouTube/Vimeo stalk of every previous work Lîla had ever made, I had an idea that voice work would happen at some point during the audition. We took part in a series of text based tasks in partners which were cleverly disguised with an added movement layer which prevented us from feeling vocally exposed. And although there were many different experiences, abilities and first languages present in the room - at no point did we (I realise I’m boldly speaking on behalf of everyone there) feel judged or under pressure and were encouraged to bring to the table a way of speaking that felt most natural to us.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Sarah Golding on auditioning for Lîla - At times it was incredibly funny, but throughout an exercise that could have felt extremely uncomfortable; enjoyment and fun was continuously encouraged in every way. The entire audition process taught me what people meant when they said "remember you are auditioning the company you are auditioning for too". I left the audition knowing I only wanted to continue my career working with people that I would feel confident and comfortable creating in the studio with. How Abi and Carrie conducted the whole audition made it totally relaxed and enjoyable from start to finish. And needless to say, this vibe has been continued throughout my whole time working with them.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - KJ Mortimer on teaching Lîla classes online - Throughout lockdown I taught a mixture of things online, Dance, Yoga, Creative sessions and Rep. When teaching for Lîla I am always very proud to be a part of the Lîla family. <image:caption>Points I’ll remember after this time… Rights and lefts aren’t the same on everyone’s screen so the years of developing my mirroring skills flew out the window. Projecting your voice (I’m always very energetic) only annoys the neighbours! Feeling excited to curate a playlist feels less exciting when you are up at all hours scrolling through royalty free music! Teaching is a part of my identity and I really miss it when it was less frequent. I LOVE seeing all the class members … preferably in person but zoom will do for the time being. The Lîla class members were full of energy and support, and were so committed, thank you! That’s all from me, Enjoy the catalogue of Lîla classes! KJX</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s great to be working at Greenwich Dance this week, especially as this will be one of our venues on our tour. It is incredible building steeped with history and it will be beautiful to see it transformed into an immersive environment like The Deluge. We are starting to arrange sections into an order, so that by the end of this week we have a rough draft of the whole show. Today was a lot of re-capping material, and trying some initial ideas. We also have a very talented young composer with us this week- Cameron Gallaher, helping with sound and music. Abi x</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - R&D Insights week 2: The Deluge - It was then that I realised how much much material had actually been created this week and how productive we have been. The the colour of the overall piece is definitely becoming visible - very exciting!!   It was great to be able to show an audience what we have produced this week. And also listen to the complementing yet challenging sound scores created by Dougie. It's funny because a lot of the time I when I am dancing the material, I struggle to notice the sound because it profoundly part of the same world that we are in as characters and movers; and very much does not feel like an added extra.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Joe's Insights: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - So, coming close to the end of our last week at Chichester University I find myself wondering where has the time gone?! With characters maturing and growing with every minute to buckets flying, it is clear that this world we are creating is becoming so real for us we can almost touch it! A big congratulations to Abi, Dougie and the company for this accomplishment. Today started with another recap of the material we have all generated for the workshops that we are going to be teaching during our tour. We used the session to video all the material and get our bodies ready for the long day ahead of us!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Kai's Insights: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - As the final hurdle approached, we all gather on the studio floor for the last time (before we start touring). Beginning the last day with a good session of improv and contact improv. Joining us in the space was Vince, this gave us the chance to play with some lights; an opportunity to see what atmospheres, landscapes and textures we could be amongst during the work :) We walked through the entire piece, to show Vince. The bodies felt heavy and sluggish, normally we would have class, run through phrases which helped condition the body in preparation. We were only 'marking' through the work, which proved to be a good indication and reminder of how tough the process has been (good tough of course!).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Carrie's Insights: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - This morning we gave the educational workshop material that we made yesterday a little test run on ourselves, our creations for the future participatory sessions felt exciting and fresh- good work team Lîla! ...oh, and Kai has invented a team game which he tested out on us... It is excellent (I won!!) and I would say more but I think he may not appreciate his next business venture being leaked over Lîla blogs... However, Watch out Dragons' Den!!! The work is now really speaking, not only theatrically but also 'shouting' out to us where last minute adjustments need to be made... It is bringing a wholeness to our journey through the dance and in clarifying intention and narrative.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Abi's Insights: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - I have learnt a huge amount through this process and have loved every single second of it. the dancers have quite literally suffered my every thought and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for hearing me, responding to me and really working WITH me the whole time. I have a wonderful collaborative team on this project and the work is a result of a group of people that want to share in making the best and most honest work we are able.</image:title>
<image:caption>on the final day we shared the final work (in its barest state) to a select few and I was delighted by how the work was received. It was a diverse audience of dancers, theatre practitioners and non-dance/theatre professionals, and I was interested by what they all had to say. I was most happy that the non "arts" professionals enjoyed and felt moved by the work as this is what I set out to do... Produce a work for a wider audience in an attempt to not make contemporary dance for a contemporary dance audience. I am not sure yet how the work will be received on a wider level and I will be interested talk with people about their experience following the early shows. Photo by James Rowbotham</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - R&D Insights week 4: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - …we all agreed to be patient to find a right construction of the piece. We might have to give up some of nice moments and have to make some more new stuff but all for good... When we discuss, I can feel that all of us think so hard and argue with passion, what a good team:)… We like certain images a lot but at times they kill the dynamic of actual material. Images are important but again we really look for the best quality of whole thing, an image doesn't live long enough. Coming back after 2 weeks away from the process seemed extremely natural, for me the work had been swimming through my thoughts on a daily basis but with a sense of space for dreaming about the possibilities in a more fantastical way than a practical one (this was an indulgence that wasn't always possible when you are dealing with cogs of the work). For me something seemed clearer in my understanding of my place within the medley of personalities in our work. The vocabulary felt more present in my body and the detail more significant than ever.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - R&D Insights week 2: The Incredible Presence of a Remarkable Absence - Today we revisited a duet that Aya and I created during R&D... both of us struggled to remember it as it was a rather inorganic in a way and hard to sequence together - this created an interesting dynamic but a lack of rhythm (stop - start- brain and body come together and remember!!!). Today through the clarifying process of teaching the material to Kai and Joe we uncovered the rhythmic journey of the material and it took on a new life for myself and Aya finding the intention for action. Joe and Kai's physical personalities also impacted on the vocabulary and revealed new meanings and qualities... Overall the world seems to be emerging around these 4 characters... I feel more aware of what the ground would look like and how big and small the space feels at different points. I am also beginning to understand how significant or insignificant I can be in each scenario.... I thought about the sound in that respect yesterday, some sounds within Dougie's work feel prominent whilst others less so yet without the presence of the less prominent sounds would the other feel so very important? <image:caption>Dance is amazing. Everyone dances when they are a child and then so often we forget the joy it brings us. We hope to rekindle the love of dance through involving participants in our work from the outset. We share, invite people to learn with us and dance with us; often as part of our professional productions and we consider them as important as each professional sharing the stage with them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Donate - Where your support goes</image:title>
<image:caption>By donating directly to Lîla your money will be used to: fund the work we tour pay our Lîla Associate Artists to teach classes ensure the freelance arts sector is healthy and financially stable. When we’re on the road we always hope to work with the communities we visit, bringing dance to local groups that don’t often get the opportunity to experience it. We run outreach workshops with participants of all ages. However, this is only possible through funding for the tour and participation activity. We really appreciate your generosity and we’d love to say thank you so please do tell us why you’ve donated and perhaps we can invite you into the studio to come and watch us create and share our biscuits. <image:caption>As Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Dance degree at Arts University Bournemouth, I am relishing the opportunity of making a degree course that is attempting to shake up the national dance landscape. The aim to train and produce industry aware portfolio dance artists is a big task. Many creative and academic conversations need to be had at the same time, to make sure that as a course and an institution we are at the forefront of implementing any change. This is a huge task and at a basic level is about HE progression. However my interests as an experienced dance educator in the FE sector are also allowing me to look at the dance provision in schools and colleges with the aim of supporting the art form as a whole, regarding what qualifications are on offer as well as considering whether they are relevant and achievable for Level 2 and 3 implementation.</image:caption>
